    8/27/08 - We've added coloring sheets!

We've finally convinced our four-legged webmaster Doolittle to add some coloring sheets to our website. Well, the pup just did - so we're adding this little announcement.

If you click on the "Fun Activities" link at the top of the page, you'll be taken to a brand new page that has several coloring sheets of Jack and his friends from the Zinghoppers TV Show...Penelope The Possum, Olo The Donkey, Coconuts The Kangaroo and of course, The Happy Train.

Each picture is formatted on standard 8.5" x 11" printing paper and is a PDF file that can be easily downloaded.

So grab your crayons and have some fun. Oh, and we'd love to see your work, so if you'd like to send us your creations...here's how.

PS - Doolittle has a new page!

    8/24/08 - We're filming a live DVD on October 25!

We're excited to be filming our first live DVD...and you're invited to the party!

Get ready to hop, dance, sing, clap and groove to the music of Conductor Jack And Friends featuring his band of musicians playing string bass, fiddle, mandolin and drums. Special guests include: Penelope The Possum, Olo The Donkey and Coconuts The Kangaroo from the Zinghoppers Show, a string quartet, puppets, dancers, guest vocalists and more!

We will be filming two shows on Saturday, October 25 at the Wesley Theater in Cookeville...so bring the family for a fun day of music. This is a casual event, and kids will have the opportunity to see a "behind the scenes" look at how television and movies are made. We'd love to have you be a part of our hootenanny party!

We'll be posting a lot more information on this special event in the upcoming months, but for now: click here.

8/17/08 - Jack's wife Kitty interviewed in Tennessee's Working Woman

A note from Jack: We were excited to be contacted by a brand new magazine published in Memphis called, "Tennessee's Working Woman". It features news, business items and profiles on hard working women in Tennessee. I'm so glad that they asked my wife Kitty to be in their premier issue (available in October). They allowed us to reprint the interview. Way to go, Kitty! I'm glad the "brains behind pa" finally gets some ink of her own!

    KITTY'S MUSIC FOR KIDDIES
    by Sylvia Anderson

I recently had coffee with Kitty Norton, wife of Nashville children's musician, Conductor Jack. The pair is one of the hardest working acts in children's music and I learned that Kitty is the driving force of the business. As President and CEO of Wonderiffic Entertainment, Kitty develops children's television shows, writes music and manages the career of her husband. The couple recently moved from their native Minnesota to rural middle Tennessee.

How long have you been doing music?
My first "gig" was when I was just two years old. My sister and I sang at our church in Jamaica.

    So you are Jamaican?
Yes, my mother is from Jamaica and our family joke is that she's related to half the island. My grandma used to babysit a young Bob Marley. She's also related to a former prime minister, and we also had a relative in the Parliament. I'll be able to tell my kids they are descendants of Jamaican royalty. My fathers roots are from Ireland, England, Austria and India - so I'm a real melting pot. I check every box on census reports or voter cards that ask what race I am!

So you've been doing music since you were two years old?
I suppose, but not professionally until I was eleven! I used money from my baby-sitting jobs to pay to record my first demo tape and I started attending black music expos in Minneapolis, Chicago and St. Louis.

    Where did you grow up?
Both my husband Jack and I grew up in Minneapolis, just about two miles from each other! We didn't meet until we both auditioned for the Perpich Center for Arts Education, which is an arts high school in a Minneapolis suburb.

I have to ask. Growing up in Minneapolis, did you listen to a lot of Prince's music?
Of course! The first date Jack ever took me on was to a private concert by Prince at his home. It was a benefit for the Mayor Sharon Sayles Belton. I heard he sold a banjo on Ebay to afford the tickets. That's a sign of dedication: selling a banjo to take your high school sweetheart to a Prince concert!
Later, I sang on a lot of demos that were recorded [at Prince's studio] Paisley Park. I've worked with many of his musicians and have really been influenced by his music and the Minneapolis urban music scene in general.

Does Jack like urban music too?
Yes, most people are surprised to learn that he doesn't just listen to 1920s banjo music all day long. I've taught him to tolerate a lot of hip hop, r&b and gospel.

    And reggae?
Well, he enjoys reggae a lot more than I do! He keeps telling me that he wants to make a reggae album and I'm worried that someday he actually will! Whenever we visit family in Jamaica, he's always going to clubs and trying to see live reggae bands.

    Who are your favorite singers?
I like Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Deborah Cox, Faith Hill, Celine Dion, CeCe Winans and Christina Aguilera.

Did you go to school for music?
I went to a performing arts high school for two years then at Bible College I studied music ministry. Jack attended Bible College too but he was kicked out for running a record company out of his dorm room.

Really? They kicked him out for that?
Yes, we started a record company in his dorm room and he removed all the furniture [provided by the school] including the bed, desk and dresser. He just didn't have the space for all that because he had thousands of albums and mailers and everything you'd need to run a record company.

What kinds of music did that company release?
Anything we wanted to. Jack's folk music. My neosoul jazz stuff. Lots of friends' punk bands. Mostly we released everything on vinyl which Jack thought was a good idea. I told him that we'd probably sell more if we released everything on CD but that was before I trained him to listen to my advice! The company didn't last too long, just long enough for him to get kicked out of Bible college!

How long did you date and when did you get married?
We dated for eight years and got married on the railroad tracks behind our high school. It doesn't sound too romantic but it's significant for us, because we used to take long walks after school and that's where we fell in love! It was a beautiful day. I think it's not about the ceremony but it's about the commitment and the person. I know that sounds basic but it's sometimes hard to remember in our culture.

    Any advice for newlyweds?
Well we're only four years in, but we're best friends and have known each other for twelve years now. I'd say marry your best friend and you'll be fine.
When we first got married we had absolutely no money and no possessions. All we had was an old 1978 Ford F250 pickup truck full of instruments and our dog Doolittle. We'd simply go from town to town and gig to gig making music.
It sounds a bit scary now, but I think not having any home actually helped us grow as a couple. We lived out of the truck, in campsites and at motels. It was romantic and lots of fun. Nowadays, we try to be a bit more professional.

    How do you mean?
We're a business now. We realized that we could make music our living and so we are. We've incorporated, we have a board of directors, pay our taxes. It's a lot of work but incredibly rewarding to be your own boss and to do what you love.

What's a typical day like for you?
Our business is still growing so someday we hope to have a bigger support staff. We have a friend named Tim that helps us schedule shows. Jack does that work too. I do a lot of promotion and publicity work to help promote our shows and projects. I do more of the graphic design and creative fun jobs like writing songs or designing t-shirts and the website. We record a lot of songs and have lots of projects going at once. Our office looks somewhat crazy with maps, three years worth of calendars and idea plans on all the walls.
A typical day for us begins with a very early morning conference call to Tim in Australia. We usually are at our computers e-mailing or calling venues, promoting our new CD or doing business stuff. Jack has a show somewhere pretty much every day and when he plays them I usually bring my laptop and do creative fun stuff. After the gig, we'll get back to our office and finish with e-mails. We try to have a big campfire or jam with friends several times a week just for fun. We have a home studio with ProTools and also a studio in Nashville we work at and we usually spend three or four evenings a week working on our various projects.

What projects are you working on?
We are filming a live DVD this fall with Jack's kids band [Conductor Jack And Friends] and the Zinghoppers. Jack's CD, "Toot! Toot! All Aboard!" sold out this month and we are remixing it and adding a few songs. We have three new CDs scheduled for this next year as well.

    Who does the Zinghoppers voices?
I help with the voices of Penelope The Possum and Olo The Donkey. I also do most of the harmony vocals as "The Possumettes", which are the female backup singers you can hear on our CDs.

Do you just do children's music now?
    Yes, children's and family music.

    Any other thoughts?
I am incredibly blessed to do what I love with my best friend, the man I love. We're not rich, certainly not famous - but we do what we love, get to travel and make music. Who could ask for more? Thanks for asking all these great questions...I had a lot of fun answering them!

8/12/08 - Conductor Jack mentioned in The Tennessean

Conductor Jack is mentioned in this weeks' edition of "All The Rage", an entertainment newspaper published by The Tennessean.

We were excited to learn that actress Kimberly Williams-Paisley (and her young son) recently attended a show by Conductor Jack at Whole Foods Natural Marketplace.

Mrs. Williams-Paisley is best known as the star of the films "Father Of The Bride", "Father Of The Bride Part II" and ABC TV's hit sitcom, "According To Jim". In addition to being a busy mom, she's also the wife of country music superstar Brad Paisley.

She's written a great book to encourage kids everywhere to eat their veggies. To purchase a copy of Henry and the Hidden Veggie Garden, click here. It's a wonderful read with a great message to get kids to love eating healthy!

As many of you know, Jack also loves to encourage healthy eating and physical activity. In fact, we are working on a new musical program and interactive section of this website to encourage healthy eating for preschoolers. We'll be announcing more about this in the upcoming months.

In the meantime, we'd really like to thank Rachel Woodward, a mom who often attends Jack's performances in the Franklin area, for sending us this clipping - it's always fun to add to our scrapbook! So thanks, Rachel!

We love hearing from moms, dads and caregivers - if you'd like to contact us just send an email to Jack at: jack@jacknorton.net or to Kitty at: kitty@jacknorton.net. Most of the news postings on our site come from you...so please, stay connected!

    8/11/08 - Feature article on Zooglobble.com

Conductor Jack has a brief feature on Zooglobble.com - a great blog all about children's and family music. We're always excited when ukuleles, family music and "Polly Wolly Doodle" come together in one fine article. Thanks Stefan, well done!

8/4/08 - A Show to celebrate Imagination Library Week

Conductor Jack is proud to announce the availability of a special show offered to libraries during the month of September in honor of Dolly Parton's Imagination Library Program.

"All Aboard The Reading Train" is a one-man musical program that features upbeat music for preschoolers, folk instruments, train songs and puppets: all to celebrate the joys of reading. This program was developed by Jack and his wife Kitty (each have a degree in Early Childhood Education) along with their support team of education experts from the Mayo Clinic and the University of Minnesota. So hop on the reading train with Conductor Jack for a foot-stomping, hand-clapping, organic, feel-good hootenanny for preschoolers and their families! A perfect way to celebrate Dolly Parton's Imagination Library Program.

For more information on this great program, click here. In the meantime, here's some history on the Imagination Library program:

In 1996, Dolly Parton launched an exciting new effort to benefit the children of her home county in east Tennessee. Dolly wanted to foster a love of reading among her county’s preschool children and their families. She wanted children to be excited about books and to feel the magic that books can create. Moreover, she could insure that every child would have books, regardless of their family’s income.

So she decided to mail a brand new, age appropriate book each month to every child under 5 in Sevier County. With the arrival of every child’s first book, the classic The Little Engine That Could ™, every child could now experience the joy of finding their very own book in their mail box. These moments continue each month until the child turns 5—and in their very last month in the program they receive Look Out Kindergarten Here I Come.

Needless to say the experience has been a smashing success. So much so that many other communities clamored to provide the Imagination Library to their children. Dolly thought long and hard about it and decided her Foundation should develop a way for other communities to participate. The Foundation asked a blue ribbon panel of experts to select just the right books and secured Penguin Group USA to be the exclusive publisher for the Imagination Library. Moreover a database was built to keep track of the information.

Consequently, in March of 2000 she stood at the podium of The National Press Club in Washington, D.C. and revealed the plan for other communities to provide the Imagination Library to their children. And as only Dolly can say it, she wanted to “put her money where her mouth is – and with such a big mouth that’s a pretty large sum of money” and provide the books herself to the children of Branson, Missouri and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina – communities where her businesses now operate. If other leaders in their communities were willing to do the same, well something big might just happen.

    You know what? It did!!

Be sure to visit our Tour Schedule for a detailed list of upcoming shows of Conductor Jack's program, "All Aboard The Reading Train".

6/23/08 - Special new live show coming this fall!

A special program just for libraries this autumn!

"Leaves of Many Colors, Songs of Many Lands" is a one-man musical program developed by Jack and his wife Kitty (each have a degree in Early Childhood Education) along with their support team of education experts from the Mayo Clinic and the University of Minnesota. The show features children's music (for ages 1-10) as well as an educational goal of teaching diversity and cultural awareness by presenting folk music from around the world. With musical stops in the United States, Jamaica, Latin America, Africa, France, Japan and Australia, this "adventure around the world in song" is a foot-stomping, crowd-pleasing, high-energy, one-of-a-kind show!

Playing an assortment of folk instruments like the ukulele, guitar, banjo, kazoo, harmonica and his own "magic trumpet", Jack's show has been called "engaging, mesmerizing and captivating" by Parent Magazine. Norton has been described as "Mr. Rogers with a ukulele" by the Arizona Republic and "a near brilliant children's songwriter" by the Washington Post. Jack also tours with the popular preschool band the Zinghoppers as seen on PBS, NBC and FOX television. Jack's dedication to his craft, one-of-a-kind live performances, and his respect and honor of children, makes him one of today's foremost family-friendly entertainers.

    6/16/08 - Additional Websites...

We have several additional weblinks to offer friends and fans of Conductor Jack and the Zinghoppers. Our support team at Wonderiffic Entertainment are very committed to providing safe, entertaining and reliable content to families and children. We take this very seriously, especially as we expand our online presence. As entertainers of all ages (mostly young children, however), we recognize that parents and caregivers of children are concerned about appropriate content for youngsters online.

Although we have a Myspace page, we do not accept friend requests. This is due to the nature of Myspace (with its countless links and web of networking). We simply cannot control the content (pictures and language) of each "friend". Therefore, to offer a safe viewing experience for all, we are unable to accept "friend requests".

Due to the rising popularity of such "social networking" sites, we are now offering a Conductor Jack page on Facebook. Similar to our Myspace page, we will not be accepting "friend" requests. So why a social networking page? We look at them as a tool to bring potential web surfers to our official websites (www.jacknorton.net and www.zinghoppers.com - of which we can provide safe and reliable content for children and families.

Finally, we also have a page at ReverbNation. This is a great resources for independent musicians offering fun "widgets" that enable our friends and fans to offer our tour schedule, maps, music players and more to their own personal sites, blogs, social networking pages, etc. In the next few weeks, check back and we will offer more networking opportunities through ReverbNation. You can even join our mailing list and help support Jack, Kitty and all at Wonderiffic spread the word about our music for children and families! Our page can be found at: www.reverbnation.com/conductorjack.

Here's an example of a music player you can add to your site...just click the "share" link on the upper right hand corner and follow the easy steps! We promise to add some new songs soon just for you!

5/16/08 - Concert Review in Freeman Courier

We'd like to thank Tim L. Waltner for writing a great concert review and article on Jack's show this past weekend at the Freeman Academy in Freeman, South Dakota. Although this was a rare performance for a (mostly) adult audience by Jack and the Mullet River Boys, there is a lot of discussion within the article on Jack's music for children. We really appreciate the kind words and great article! A big "hello" to all our new friends in Freeman!

To read this article, click here.

5/15/08 - Article in Raising Arizona Kids

We are featured in today's Raising Arizona Kids magazine! Here's a reprint of the article and photo...thanks for Dan and everyone at Raising Arizona Kids for their support!

    Music with Zing
    By Daniel Friedman

Jack and Kitty Norton of Cave Creek play hundreds of concerts for crowds of adoring, devoted fans. The Nortons created Zinghoppers characters and music to get children ages 4 and younger moving and singing along. The characters Penelope Possum (that's her at left, recording their latest CD), Coconuts the Kangaroo, Olo the Donkey and Conductor [Jack] are animated and innocent, just like the fans. "Good kid's music should not be annoying to adults," says Jack. "And [kids] should respond instinctively to the beat and the characters singing it."

Jack played bluegrass with the Mullet River Boys, sharing the stage with performers including Norah Jones, Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson. He and Kitty both earned degrees in early childhood education from the University of Minnesota to inform their music and make sure it is developmentally appropriate for their fans. (For example, singing "Hop on one foot" may not work for a child who can't yet do that.) Kitty writes most of the songs, scripts performances and lends her voice to some of the characters.

The Zinghoppers toured Australia last year, are on the road right now and they're back in the Valley in June. Check out their concert schedule at zinghoppers.com.

    4/10/08 - Words & Music Program

Jack will be a participating songwriter for the Country Music Hall of Fame's Words and Music Education Outreach Program.

Classes participating in the program complete a four-part lesson plan, developed by the Museum, which highlights the lyric-writing process. Students write or co-write lyrics in the classroom; the lyrics are then given to professional songwriters, who refine their lyrics and add melodies. Finally, students visit the Museum for a tour and a performance of their songs by their participating songwriter.

More than 4,700 kindergarten through 12th-grade students at 51 Tennessee and Florida schools wrote songs that were put to music by 48 volunteer professional songwriters throughout the 2007-08 school year. This is the 29th year that the Museum has offered its Words & Music program.

Stay tuned. We'll try to add song samples of the tunes Jack writes with the students!

    3/11/08 - Two classic family-folk CDs reissued!

We are excited to be offering two of Jack's most popular "family folk" albums again! Although both albums are safe for children, they were originally recorded for Jack's adult fans to enjoy!

"Bound For Glory" is a collection of bluegrass gospel, mountain hymns and inspirational folk music. This album was recorded for all ages to enjoy and features Jack accompanied by a small acoustic bluegrass band featuring fiddle, mandolin, banjo, string bass and dobro.

This album is available exclusively through CDBaby.com as a MP3 Album only. For more information on how digital downloads work, click here.

For the first time ever, a special "double album" of two Jack Norton classics! Included in this pack is a CD of 1999's vaudeville-dixieland jazz masterpiece "Wizard Oil" and a 7" vinyl record (remember those?) of 2004's EP, "Roll On, Cowboy!". Jack is joined by a dixieland jazz band which features legendary bass sax man Vince Giordano and multi-instrumentalist John Gill on trombone, soprano sax and tenor banjo. Other musicians from Leon Redbone, Tom Waits and Woody Allen's bands make up Jack's group.

Our online store is back open, we apologize for the delay! 2/18/08 - Our online store is temporarily closed

Jack's online store is currently closed! Thanks to selling out all of our CDs on the Australia tour last month (yippie!), we're busy ordering product and will have the store "restocked" soon! We have several new releases were excited about...stay tuned!
